Tua Tagovailoa Poised to Join NFL’s $50 Million Club as Dolphins Eye Contract Extension

The NFL quarterback market is hotter than ever, and Tua Tagovailoa is next in line for a major payday. Following the trend set by Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow, who recently became the league’s highest-paid quarterbacks, Tagovailoa is expected to secure a deal worth over $50 million annually.

Tagovailoa, entering the final year of his rookie contract with the Miami Dolphins, will earn $23.17 million in 2024 after the team exercised his fifth-year option. While negotiations are ongoing, reports indicate that both sides are close to agreeing on an extension, potentially solidifying the deal by the end of summer.

Despite skipping some voluntary offseason programs, Tagovailoa attended Miami’s mandatory minicamp, suggesting that negotiations haven't soured the relationship. The former first-round pick expressed his desire to finalize a deal soon, highlighting the urgency and confidence in the ongoing talks. "The market is the market," he remarked, hinting at his readiness to see the negotiations through.

Projections by Spotrac estimate Tagovailoa's extension could be around four years and $198.5 million, averaging $49.6 million per year. Given the current market dynamics, though, this might be just the starting point. The timing of contract negotiations often influences these deals more than past accomplishments, paving the way for Tagovailoa to join quarterbacks like Burrow, Lawrence, and others in the $50 million club.

Tagovailoa’s performance in 2023, where he led the NFL in passing and completed a full 17-game season for the first time, underscores his value. With proven durability and high production, it's only a matter of time before he inks a lucrative contract, marking the latest chapter in the escalating quarterback market.
