Tim Beck, the head coach of Coastal Carolina's football team, reflected on his inaugural year with the Chanticleers at the Sun Belt Media Day in New Orleans. The experience, he said, was both enlightening and challenging.
“It was an incredible first year,” Beck remarked. “Serving as head coach was a tremendous learning opportunity. While they often say the second year will be easier, it never truly is. The constant evolution of our communication systems, the impact of the transfer portal, NIL regulations, and recruiting rule changes all add to the complexity. Adaptability and resilience are key.”
Beck's debut season was a success, with the Chanticleers finishing 8-5 and capping it off with a victory in the Hawai’i Bowl. However, the 2024 season promises a new set of challenges and opportunities.
This year, Coastal Carolina has added 66 new players to the roster, while also experiencing the departure of key figures such as quarterback Grayson McCall, offensive lineman Will McDonald, and linebacker JT Killen. With many new faces arriving over the summer, building team chemistry has been a primary focus.
Redshirt senior linebacker Shane Bruce acknowledged the initial difficulties. “Learning everyone’s name and getting familiar with the new faces took some time,” Bruce said. “Our focus this summer was on fostering team chemistry, and we’ve made significant strides. The team is becoming closer, and the atmosphere is positive.”
Senior offensive lineman Zac Elam echoed this sentiment. “Our goal has been to integrate the 66 new players into our program’s ethos,” Elam said. “We’ve emphasized unity, consistency, and attention to detail. These small steps lead to significant progress. We’re growing together and ready for the challenges ahead.”
The offense will see notable changes, especially at the quarterback position. Ethan Vasko, who went 3-1 last year in McCall’s absence, will return. Beck praised Vasko’s development, noting his physical and mental growth. Additionally, the team has brought in transfers Noah Kim from Michigan State and Tad Hudson from North Carolina, along with promising freshman DJ Moore.
“Our quarterback room is very talented,” Beck stated. “I’m eager to see how the competition unfolds and how each player progresses as we approach the season.”
On the defensive side, while there has been less turnover overall, the defensive line will feature 15 new players. Despite this, Bruce emphasized the team’s commitment to maintaining their strong defensive performance from last year.
“Throughout the summer, we’ve held walkthroughs and extra meetings to ensure our new players are up to speed,” Bruce said. “With camp starting soon, we’ve already adopted a camp mindset, aiming for high-level execution from day one.”
As Coastal Carolina prepares for camp next week, the competition for roster spots and playing time is heating up.
“This is a hungry team,” Beck commented. “With no long-term starters like McCall, McDonald, or Killen, everyone is eager to prove themselves. The energy in the locker room is palpable. We start our first practice on Monday, and the competition will drive us forward.”
The Chanticleers will kick off their season on August 29 at Jacksonville State, ready to build on the foundation laid last year and tackle the new challenges ahead.
