Stevenson Inks 4-Year, $36M Extension with Patriots

Rhamondre Stevenson’s confidence in a new contract was spot on. The New England Patriots and their lead running back finalized a four-year extension valued at $36 million, with $17 million guaranteed. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport broke the news on Thursday, just ten days after Stevenson’s optimistic prediction during mandatory minicamp.

Contract Details and Incentives

The extension, which runs through 2028, secures Stevenson’s position in New England’s backfield for the foreseeable future. His $9 million new-money average ranks him seventh among running backs, nestled between Joe Mixon ($9.875 million) and Derrick Henry/D’Andre Swift ($8 million). The deal also includes an $8 million signing bonus and $12 million in potential incentives from 2025 onwards.

The incentives kick in for yardage and honors: Stevenson can earn $600,000 each for reaching 1,400, 1,500, and 1,600 scrimmage yards, and another $600,000 for Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections. This structure could boost his total earnings to a possible $48 million.

Proven Performer

Stevenson burst onto the scene in 2022, compiling 1,040 rushing yards and 421 receiving yards. His 1,461 scrimmage yards in that season are particularly notable given the benchmarks in his new contract. Despite an injury-marred 2023 that limited him to 12 games and 857 scrimmage yards, the Patriots are banking on Stevenson to regain his 2022 form.

Role in Patriots’ Offense

Stevenson’s versatility as a dual-threat running back makes him a vital part of the Patriots' offensive strategy. With Antonio Gibson complementing him as a pass-catching option, Stevenson is poised to be a workhorse if he can stay healthy. The depth behind him includes Kevin Harris, JaMycal Hasty, and undrafted rookies DeShaun Fenwick and Terrell Jennings, who will vie for supporting roles.

In a talent-loaded Patriots offense, Stevenson is expected to be a central figure, handling a significant workload as both a rusher and receiver. His extension signals New England's commitment to building around their dynamic backfield leader.
