Saints Must Consider Signing La'el Collins to Bolster Offensive Line

The New Orleans Saints started the 2023 NFL season with a hard-fought 16-15 victory over the Tennessee Titans, and there was much to celebrate on the defensive side of the ball. The Saints defense was outstanding, generating three turnovers and securing a crucial win. However, the same game revealed some glaring concerns, particularly along the offensive line.

Week 1 exposed the Saints' offensive line vulnerabilities, especially when it comes to protecting their quarterback, Derek Carr. Carr was sacked a staggering four times during the game, and it was evident that second-year offensive lineman Trevor Penning struggled against the Titans' athletic pass rushers. If the Saints fail to address this issue promptly, it could jeopardize Carr's health and the team's success throughout the season.

This is where La'el Collins comes into the picture. The Saints should seriously consider signing Collins to bolster their offensive line rotation. Collins, a Baton Rouge native and former LSU Tiger, would not only add depth but also provide invaluable experience and talent to a unit in dire need of improvement. Collins was recently released by the Cincinnati Bengals after a stint on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list due to a torn ACL and MCL. The Bengals' decision to part ways with him has raised eyebrows across the NFL, and it presents a rare opportunity for teams to secure the services of a starting-caliber offensive tackle during the season.

The Saints already have a hometown hero in Trai Turner, another former LSU Tiger, but injuries have plagued the offensive line depth. Turner, who signed with the Saints during the offseason, tore his quadriceps at the beginning of training camp. Additionally, Andrus Peat has been dealing with a quad injury, further thinning the offensive line options.

Adding Collins to the mix could be a game-changer for the Saints. Not only would he bring his considerable skills to the table, but he would also be playing close to home, which often results in added motivation and enthusiasm. Collins' experience and talent would not only serve as a valuable asset for the starting lineup but also provide insurance against further injuries along the offensive front.

The recent struggles of the Cincinnati Bengals, who released Collins, should serve as a stark reminder of the importance of a solid offensive line. The Bengals had difficulties protecting Joe Burrow in their season opener, and their decision to part ways with Collins indicates that they view their offensive line as a significant concern.

For the New Orleans Saints, who have aspirations of a successful season and a deep playoff run, signing La'el Collins could be a pivotal move. It's not every day that a proven starting tackle becomes available mid-season, and the Saints should seize this rare opportunity to fortify their offensive line and ensure that Derek Carr remains upright and healthy for the entire season. Collins' presence could be the missing piece in the puzzle that propels the Saints toward their championship aspirations.
