NC State Hosts Coastal Carolina as Tropical Storm Debby Approaches

As Tropical Storm Debby barrels toward South Carolina and the East Coast, NC State has extended a helping hand to Coastal Carolina, ensuring that the Chanticleers can continue their fall preparations uninterrupted. The Coastal Carolina football team, led by head coach Tim Beck, arrived in Raleigh on Tuesday afternoon and will be conducting their practice sessions outside of Carter-Finley Stadium over the next three days.

Although Raleigh is also expected to feel the effects of Debby later this week, the impact is predicted to be much less severe than in Myrtle Beach, where Coastal Carolina is based. With the Chanticleers' indoor practice facility still under construction, Beck turned to his former colleague and NC State head coach Dave Doeren for assistance. Beck, who previously served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at NC State, received a warm welcome back to familiar grounds, allowing his team to train in a safe environment.

Beck's connection to NC State goes beyond just his coaching stint. Kriss Proctor, now Coastal Carolina’s tight ends and passing game coordinator, also has ties to the Wolfpack, having been part of the quality control staff during Beck’s tenure in Raleigh. Additionally, Grayson McCall, the current NC State quarterback, shares a history with the Chanticleers, having been a standout player at Coastal Carolina. During his time at Myrtle Beach, McCall earned three Sun Belt Player of the Year titles and amassed over 10,000 passing yards and 88 touchdowns.

Reflecting on his relationship with Beck and Proctor, McCall spoke highly of the duo and their influence on his journey to NC State. "They were incredibly supportive during the transition," McCall said earlier this year. "Coach Beck and coach Proctor always had positive things to say about this place and how it shaped their careers. It was great to have those conversations with people who knew this environment well."

Now, in a display of camaraderie, NC State is returning the favor, providing Coastal Carolina with the resources and space they need to continue preparing for the 2024 season. The Chanticleers, who also feature former NC State offensive lineman Zovon Lindsay, are set to kick off their season on August 29 against Jacksonville State, coinciding with NC State's opener against Western Carolina.

This collaborative effort underscores the strong bonds within the college football community, even in the face of challenging weather conditions.
