Morris Shines as N.C. State Outlasts Marshall in Thrilling Shootout

In a high-scoring clash that featured explosive offenses and late-game heroics, N.C. State emerged victorious over Marshall with a 48-41 win on Saturday afternoon. The game, filled with dramatic twists and lead changes, showcased the resilience of Wolfpack quarterback MJ Morris, who threw a career-best four touchdown passes in his first start of the season.

Despite facing early adversity with three interceptions, Morris, a sophomore, demonstrated remarkable mental toughness. Coach Dave Doeren praised his quarterback, stating, "He gave us the spark we needed. He's a mentally tough young man. He's going to respond – that's who he is – when he gets in a tough situation, he's going to fight." Morris completed 17-of-32 passes for 265 yards, orchestrating seven drives that ended with N.C. State putting points on the board.

The contest turned into a fast-paced shootout, with six lead changes, making it the highest-scoring game for both teams this season. Marshall's nine-game win streak dating back to last season came to an end despite a stellar performance from quarterback Cam Fancher, who amassed 315 passing yards and four touchdowns.

The turning point came in the third quarter when, after a 28-yard touchdown pass from Fancher to Jayden Harrison, Morris connected with Trent Pennix for a 62-yard touchdown – the longest offensive score of the season for the Wolfpack. N.C. State added crucial points with two field goals from Brayden Narveson and an eight-yard touchdown pass from Morris to Kevin Concepcion.

While both offenses shone, N.C. State's defensive prowess, led by Robert Kennedy and Payton Wilson, proved crucial in the victory. Kennedy's fourth-quarter fumble recovery and interception set the stage for decisive scores, while Wilson's double-digit tackles once again anchored the defense.

Despite Marshall's potent offense, the Wolfpack's ability to pressure Fancher with six sacks and six quarterback hurries on crucial downs made the difference. Marshall coach Charles Huff acknowledged the challenge, stating, "The difference between Power Five and Group of Five is depth."

Looking ahead, N.C. State (4-2) resumes ACC play against in-state rival Duke, while Marshall (4-1) will aim to rebound against Georgia State in Atlanta.

In a game filled with memorable moments, N.C. State's victory marked a fitting tribute to College Football Hall of Famer Lou Holtz, honored on the field to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wolfpack's undefeated 1973 season. With the win, N.C. State extended its perfect record against Marshall to 6-0.
