Miami Dolphins Land Calais Campbell: Veteran DE Returns to Sunshine State

The Miami Dolphins have made a splash by signing veteran defensive end Calais Campbell, adding much-needed pass-rushing power to their defensive line. This move brings Campbell, a University of Miami alumnus and one of the NFL’s most respected players, back to his college roots.

The news, initially reported by NFL Network and confirmed by the Sun Sentinel, has Dolphins fans excited about Campbell's homecoming. Over the past three seasons, the 37-year-old Campbell has been a reliable presence on the field, starting 45 out of 46 games and racking up 13.5 sacks with the Baltimore Ravens and the Atlanta Falcons.

What Campbell Brings to Miami

Campbell is known for his versatility and leadership. Standing at 6'8" and weighing 282 pounds, his size and athleticism make him a formidable force on the defensive line. With 105.5 career sacks and a track record of Pro Bowl selections, Campbell's experience is a valuable asset for the Dolphins. He's a six-time Pro Bowler, a three-time All-Pro, and was named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2019.

Despite his age, Campbell has shown he can still compete at a high level. In his illustrious career, he's earned a spot on the NFL’s 2010s All-Decade Team and has a history of performing well in the playoffs, experience that could prove crucial for a Dolphins team aiming for its first playoff victory since 2000.

How Campbell Fits with the Dolphins

Defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, who previously coached Campbell in Baltimore, is likely to use the veteran as a rotational player. However, Campbell could also compete for a starting spot in training camp, which kicks off in late July. With current starters Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips recovering from knee and Achilles injuries respectively, Campbell's presence provides both depth and experience.

Joining Campbell on the defensive line will be edge rushers Shaq Barrett and rookie first-round pick Chop Robinson. The Dolphins have been proactive in strengthening their roster, recently signing Robinson, offensive tackle Patrick Paul, and veteran safety Marcus Maye.

Campbell’s NFL Journey

Calais Campbell began his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals, who drafted him in 2008. He made his mark with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2017-2019, where he earned his only first-team All-Pro honor. Campbell also had productive stints with the Ravens and Falcons, consistently demonstrating his ability to impact the game both on and off the field.

As he gears up for his 17th NFL season, Campbell returns to Florida with a chance to make a significant impact on the Dolphins' defense. Fans and teammates alike will be looking forward to what this veteran leader can bring as Miami sets its sights on a successful season.
