Jimmy Graham: Turns Back the Clock But Texans Get the Win in Preseason Finale

In a preseason showdown that highlighted both the potential of a rising rookie and the resilience of a seasoned veteran, the Houston Texans emerged victorious against the New Orleans Saints with a final score of 17-13. The third week of preseason action offered fans a glimpse into the evolving dynamics of both teams as they fine-tuned their strategies before the regular season kick-off.

Rookie sensation C.J. Stroud, the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, made his presence known with a short yet impactful touchdown pass to Nico Collins. The connection not only put points on the board for the Texans but also solidified Stroud's position as the starting quarterback for the regular season, a remarkable achievement for a young player in a demanding league. "I'm blessed enough to be a starter so young in this league, which isn't the easiest thing to do. But I know my coaches have trust and faith in me," Stroud shared after the game, displaying his confidence and gratitude for the opportunity.

While Stroud shone on the Texans' side, the Saints had their own standout performance in the form of the tenacious Jimmy Graham. The 36-year-old tight end, who had experienced a turbulent week due to a mysterious medical episode and an encounter with the police, demonstrated his unyielding determination to contribute to the Saints' success. Graham's three catches for 34 yards, including a crucial touchdown, reminded fans of his glory days during his initial tenure with the team from 2010 to 2014.

Saints coach Dennis Allen expressed his satisfaction with Graham's performance, emphasizing the importance of veteran players stepping up when needed. "We've said this that we don't have to see it every day from these guys, particularly the veteran players, yet at some point we have to see it — and we saw it tonight," Allen stated. Graham's touchdown catch mirrored the style of play he exhibited when teamed up with quarterback Drew Brees. His ability to outmuscle defenders in tight coverage and secure contested catches harkened back to his prime years, making it evident that he still has the capacity to be a game-changer on the field. In a symbolic gesture that delighted the Superdome crowd, Graham playfully leaped toward the goal post after his touchdown catch, as if to dunk the ball over the crossbar. While this celebration was once a trademark of Graham's, it now constitutes a rule violation following an incident in 2013 when he inadvertently knocked a goal post out of alignment.

The Texans' victory was further punctuated by a spinning, tackle-slipping 11-yard run from veteran running back Mike Boone in the third quarter, which propelled Houston to a 17-10 lead. While New Orleans' undrafted rookie kicker Blake Grupe managed to convert field goals from 38 and 50 yards, he narrowly missed a 60-yard attempt.

Both teams had opportunities to seize victory in the late stages of the game. However, interceptions by Texans safety Grayland Arnold and cornerback Cameron Dantzler ultimately solidified Houston's triumph. As the preseason drew to a close, the Saints and the Texans offered their fans a tantalizing preview of the upcoming regular season. While Stroud's debut touchdown and Graham's resurgence took center stage, it's clear that both teams are working diligently to refine their strategies and assemble winning lineups. As the regular season approaches, the football community eagerly anticipates how these preseason glimpses will translate into thrilling matchups and unforgettable moments on the gridiron.
