It Is Time For the New Orleans Saints Organization to Face Reality: Dennis Allen is not the Answer

In a season marked by inconsistency and a lack of identity, the New Orleans Saints find themselves at a critical juncture. Following a disappointing loss to their arch-rivals, the Atlanta Falcons, this past Sunday, questions are mounting about the leadership of head coach Dennis Allen and the direction of the organization as a whole.

The Saints entered the game against the Falcons coming off a bye week – a period many teams utilize to hit the reset button and address any lingering issues. Unfortunately for New Orleans, this break did little to change their fortunes as they fell 24-15 to a divisional opponent, further exposing the team's struggles in 2023.

Dennis Allen, handpicked from the coaching staff of the legendary Sean Payton, was seen as a continuity choice. However, with a coaching record of 20-44 all-time and a team that appears to lack any clear sense of direction, it's becoming increasingly evident that the organization needs to embrace change.

The Saints, under Allen's watch, have been unpredictable from week to week, with both the offense and defense failing to establish a consistent identity. While Allen is known for his defensive expertise, the unit has been a mere shadow of its former self, allowing even mediocre quarterbacks to exploit its vulnerabilities. The failure to neutralize opposing teams' best players has become a glaring issue, a fundamental mistake that any seasoned coach would strive to avoid.

Offensively, the team's lack of identity is striking, with offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael seemingly unable to fill the void left by Sean Payton's departure. Carmichael, who has been with the Saints for an impressive 15 seasons, now faces scrutiny as the offensive play-caller, struggling to establish a rhythm and cohesion with quarterback Derek Carr, whose struggles in the red zone have persisted for the entirety of the season.

Derek Carr's acquisition in the offseason was expected to bring stability to the quarterback position, but 12 weeks into the season, the results have been disappointing. Carr's inability to establish chemistry with his receivers has resulted in a meager two touchdown passes in the last three games, raising questions about the decision-making process that led to his signing.

The Saints organization, led by General Manager Mickey Loomis and owner Gayle Benson, now stands at a crossroads. With six games left in the regular season, it is imperative that they objectively assess the team's performance and coaching staff. The days of Drew Brees and Sean Payton are over, and clinging to the past may lead to further decline.

Mickey Loomis, in particular, must resist the temptation to let a potential playoff push cloud his judgment about the future of Dennis Allen. The coach has shown an inability to sustain success, regardless of the roster or the opposing team's quarterback. If the Saints want to maintain the trust of their loyal fanbase, change is not just an option – it's a necessity.

As the 2023 season unfolds, the Saints organization must come to terms with the reality of their team's current state and make decisions that reflect a commitment to success in the post-Brees era. The fans, discerning and passionate, deserve a team that competes at the highest level. With the clock ticking on the regular season, the future of the New Orleans Saints hangs in the balance.
