Injury Woes: Key Players Missing From Practice as Saints Prepare for Week 1

As the season opener approaches, the Saints are grappling with multiple injury setbacks that could impact their roster for Week 1. Several players were absent from practice, leaving coaches and fans alike monitoring their progress closely.

Among those not seen at practice were linebacker Willie Gay Jr. (undisclosed), defensive tackle Khalen Saunders (calf), linebackers D'Marco Jackson (calf) and Jaylan Ford (hamstring), as well as tight end Dallin Holker (ankle). Saunders’ calf issue is particularly concerning, as he is expected to miss the start of the season, a likely reason the Saints recently traded for defensive tackle John Ridgeway III from Washington.

Jackson’s status is also up in the air, and his ability to suit up in Week 1 remains uncertain. Ford, who missed much of training camp due to a string of injuries, is another defensive piece whose return timeline remains unclear.

One bright spot amidst the injuries is guard Nick Saldiveri, who was a limited participant in practice after sitting out since late July with a calf injury. Saldiveri had emerged as a top contender for the starting left guard position before his setback, so his return, even in a limited capacity, is a positive step.

The most unexpected name on the list is Willie Gay Jr., expected to be a pivotal player in the Saints' defense. His absence raises questions, and fans will need to keep an eye on his condition as the week progresses.

With soft tissue injuries mounting, the Saints are hopeful these players can recover quickly, but the uncertainty surrounding several key pieces could shake up their Week 1 lineup.
