Giants Edge Lions 14-3 in Preseason Opener, Highlighted by Eric Gray’s Breakout Performance

The New York Giants kicked off their 2024 preseason with a 14-3 victory over the Detroit Lions at a rainy MetLife Stadium. While the game itself was calm, both teams faced a $200,000 fine earlier in the week due to heated joint practices. Despite the off-field tensions, the game was relatively subdued—except for the electrifying performance of Giants running back Eric Gray.

Gray, entering his second year, stole the spotlight with a stellar showing in the first half. He totaled 98 yards from scrimmage and found the end zone twice, showcasing his versatility as both a receiver and an elusive runner. His performance hinted at a potential breakout season, especially given the void left by the departure of Saquon Barkley.

Quarterback Drew Lock started for the Giants but struggled, throwing a costly interception before exiting the game early after a hard fall. Fortunately, Giants GM Joe Schoen reassured fans that Lock’s injury was not serious. Tommy DeVito, stepping in for Lock, reignited the Giants' offense, completing 8 of 15 passes for 92 yards and leading two consecutive touchdown drives in the second quarter.

For the Lions, Nate Sudfeld took the starting quarterback role, completing 13 of 24 passes for 96 yards, but he also threw an interception. Fans were eager to see Hendon Hooker, the former third-round pick out of Tennessee, who made his NFL debut in the second half. Hooker managed 36 passing yards on 5 of 9 attempts and added 34 rushing yards, including a memorable 16-yard run where he bulldozed through a defender. Unfortunately, his debut was cut short after suffering a potential concussion in the fourth quarter.

Although many starters were rested, and the second half remained scoreless, there were key takeaways from the game. The Giants' offense, which ranked among the league’s worst last season, showed signs of life when DeVito took the reins. His connection with Gray on a 24-yard wheel route set the tone for a strong offensive push, leading to a 48-yard touchdown run by Gray just two plays later.

On the other hand, Lock’s performance raised concerns. The Mizzou product's hesitance to target rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers deep frustrated fans, and his early exit due to injury didn’t help his case. Nabers, the No. 6 overall pick, made a brief appearance, but his potential remains untapped due to missed opportunities.

Giants fans, however, have every reason to be excited about Gray, who stepped up in the absence of Barkley. Gray’s 98 all-purpose yards in just one half outpaced the entire Lions' offense at that point in the game, solidifying his claim for more playing time.

For Hooker, the night was bittersweet. After waiting nearly two years post-ACL injury to see NFL action, his debut showed flashes of promise, particularly with his mobility. Yet, his premature exit due to a concussion is a setback as he competes with Sudfeld for the backup quarterback position. Missing more time due to injury could hinder his progress, especially given Sudfeld’s underwhelming performance.

As the preseason continues, both teams will look to build on their lessons from this opener. For the Giants, the emergence of Gray as a potential offensive weapon and DeVito’s steady hand are promising signs, while the Lions will focus on getting Hooker back on the field and evaluating their quarterback depth.
