Eagles Shift Strategy: James Bradberry Transitions to Safety

In a surprising move, the Philadelphia Eagles have decided to reposition veteran cornerback James Bradberry to safety, a position he has never played before. This decision comes after the team selected cornerbacks with their first two picks in the recent NFL draft, signaling a new direction for Bradberry’s role on the team.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni announced the change on Tuesday, highlighting Bradberry's versatility and past performance in various defensive positions. “He was able to do a couple different things last year,” Sirianni said, via Martin Frank of the Delaware News Journal. “He played the majority of his career at corner and then was able to do some things at the dime, some things at the nickel, some things at the corner. Now he’s working some of the safety stuff. I’m excited about that, and his opportunity.”

Sirianni pointed to the success of other NFL players who transitioned from cornerback to safety, such as Charles Woodson, who excelled in multiple defensive roles throughout his career.

Bradberry, 30, earned All-Pro honors at cornerback in 2022 and was signed to a three-year, $38 million deal by the Eagles in March 2023. Despite a decline in performance in 2023, his contract, which includes $20 million in guarantees, likely secured his spot on the roster. Without this financial commitment, the Eagles might have considered releasing him.

The Eagles are in need of depth at safety behind starters Reed Blankenship and CJ Gardner-Johnson, especially with third-round pick Sydney Brown still recovering from a torn ACL. Other players vying for a spot include Mekhi Garner, Tristin McCollum, and Andre Sam, with veteran nickel corner Avonte Maddox also cross-training at safety.

“James has always been a team guy from the moment he stepped in here,” Sirianni added. “He’ll do anything for his teammates.”

However, Bradberry's transition hit a snag during the first mandatory minicamp practice on Tuesday, as he left the field early after falling in an individual drill. The nature and severity of the injury remain unknown, according to Frank.

The Eagles’ decision to move Bradberry to safety is a strategic shift that could bolster their defensive lineup if he adapts well to the new position. As the team gears up for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on Bradberry's performance and his ability to thrive in his new role.
