Coastal Carolina Quarterback Grayson McCall Eyes New Horizon as Graduate Transfer

In a surprising turn of events, Coastal Carolina's seasoned quarterback, Grayson McCall, has once again entered the transfer portal as a graduate transfer, signaling a potential change in the dynamic landscape of college football. McCall, who has been at the helm for the Chanticleers for the past four seasons, is set to explore new opportunities after amassing an impressive record of 10,005 passing yards and 88 touchdowns with a remarkable 14 interceptions.

This isn't McCall's first foray into the transfer portal, having previously tested the waters in December 2022 only to withdraw his name and return to Coastal Carolina. Now, with one season of eligibility remaining, McCall's decision to explore the transfer market raises eyebrows and sparks speculation about where his considerable talents may find a new home.

The 2023 season saw McCall start seven games for Coastal Carolina, a period cut short by a head injury that sidelined him for the final five contests of the regular season. Despite the setback, McCall concluded the year with 1,919 passing yards and 10 touchdowns, coupled with a career-high six interceptions. This marked a departure from his stellar performance in 2021, where he achieved a career-best 2,873 passing yards and 27 touchdowns, complemented by 290 rushing yards and four scores.

McCall's journey with the Chanticleers began in 2020, where he quarterbacked them to an improbable Sun Belt co-championship in his first year as a starter. During that remarkable season, he threw for 2,488 yards and 26 touchdowns while adding 569 rushing yards and seven touchdowns to his impressive stat line.

Joining the ranks of other notable quarterbacks like Arkansas' K.J. Jefferson, Mississippi State's Will Rogers, and Kansas State's Will Howard in the transfer portal, McCall is poised to attract widespread interest from programs seeking a veteran presence at the quarterback position. Despite not receiving any known Power Five offers during his initial recruitment, McCall's consistent and noteworthy production at Coastal Carolina positions him as an instant asset for teams looking to bolster their quarterback roster.

Hailing from North Carolina, McCall's return to the transfer portal injects a fresh layer of intrigue into the college football offseason. As Coastal Carolina looks ahead to a to-be-determined bowl game following a 7-5 regular season under first-year coach Tim Beck, the departure of McCall leaves a void that raises questions about the team's future quarterback strategy. The upcoming months promise to be a period of transition and anticipation as college football enthusiasts await the next chapter in Grayson McCall's collegiate journey.
