Coastal Carolina Freshman Quarterback DJ Moore No Longer with Team Following Arrest

Coastal Carolina University has announced that freshman quarterback Doran “DJ” Moore Jr. is no longer part of the football program. The decision comes in the wake of Moore's arrest in mid-October, though the specific reasons for his dismissal remain undisclosed by the team.

Head coach Tim Beck addressed the situation on November 13, confirming that Moore is no longer playing for the Chanticleers. However, Beck declined to elaborate on the circumstances, stating he was "not at liberty" to provide additional details.

Arrest and Charges

Moore, an 18-year-old from Jacksonville, Florida, was arrested on October 17 by the Coastal Carolina University Police Department. According to police records, he faces charges including simple possession of marijuana and carrying or displaying firearms in public buildings or adjacent areas. Additional charges listed in South Carolina court records include:

  • Unlawful use of a license or fraudulent application for a license

  • Purchase or possession of beer or wine by a minor

  • Unlawful advertisement or possession of drug paraphernalia

  • Possession or attempted possession of a tobacco product by a minor

Moore posted a $2,115 bond and was released from custody on October 18. Further incidents with campus police occurred between October 23 and October 28, resulting in additional charges of unlawful use of a license and possession of alcohol as a minor. Court proceedings for these charges have been rescheduled for later in November.

A Promising Prospect

Before joining Coastal Carolina, Moore was a highly regarded recruit. Rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports, he had offers from prominent programs including Tennessee, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Louisville, and Virginia Tech. Despite his potential, Moore had not appeared in any games for the Chanticleers this season.

Fallout

Moore’s departure from the team marks a swift and decisive move by the Coastal Carolina program. The university has not released further details about the case, and requests for more information are pending under the Freedom of Information Act.

The incident underscores the challenges that athletes can face balancing their high-profile roles with personal conduct expectations. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this will impact both Moore’s future and Coastal Carolina’s football program moving forward.
