Coastal Carolina Breaks Ground on $20 Million Indoor Practice Facility

Coastal Carolina University has set its sights on the future of its athletic programs with the groundbreaking of a state-of-the-art indoor practice facility, a monumental milestone that promises to elevate the Chanticleers to new heights. On a sunny Thursday morning, university officials, athletes, and fans gathered to witness the commencement of construction on this $20 million project that will undoubtedly reshape the landscape of Coastal Carolina sports.

At the heart of this endeavor is a 90,000-square-foot indoor facility, strategically located across from Brooks Stadium. It is set to revolutionize how the university's athletes, especially the football team, prepare for competition. The facility boasts a regulation-size football field with vibrant teal turf, ensuring that training can continue unhindered by adverse weather conditions. In addition to the field, the facility will feature two filming platforms, restrooms, storage rooms, and a well-equipped athletic training space accessible from both inside and outside practice areas.

What makes this groundbreaking even more remarkable is that the lion's share of funding for this ambitious project will come from generous donations, cementing its status as the largest donor-funded initiative in the history of Coastal Carolina University. Head Football Coach Tim Beck expressed his enthusiasm for the facility and its impact on the team's performance, stating, "You gotta have a place to go to continue to practice so you can compete at the highest level. This facility and the support from the university, and the community, to build it shows that they're behind our players, our student-athletes, and it's gonna give us an opportunity to compete." Director of Athletics, Joe Moglia, emphasized the competitive advantage this facility will bring to the Chanticleers. "Prior to 2017, many of the schools we played had indoor facilities, since 2017 almost everybody we play has an indoor facility," Moglia noted. "When we have any sort of rain, or bad weather, or lightning, we can't practice, but we can if we have an indoor facility." However, the impact of this groundbreaking extends beyond the football field. The indoor facility will provide invaluable space for various other athletic programs, student clubs, and organizations, making it a true community asset. "This is for our entire community," said CCU President Michael T. Benson. "It will be used by the community, by intramurals, by club sports, we'll use it for staging, for graduation when we have ceremonies in the stadium, so yes it will be used predominantly by our intercollegiate athletics, but this is for everybody." The construction of this groundbreaking facility is set to be spearheaded by Contract Construction, with work scheduled to commence in January 2024 and a projected completion date in the spring of 2025. This timeline aligns perfectly with the university's commitment to providing its athletes with a world-class training environment. The timing of this momentous occasion is serendipitous, coinciding with the Chanticleers' 2023 home opener against Jacksonville State, scheduled for 7 p.m. this Saturday. It serves as a symbolic prelude to what promises to be an exciting era in Coastal Carolina sports, as the university positions itself as a formidable contender on the national stage. As the golden shovels turned the earth, the future of Coastal Carolina athletics began to take shape beneath the South Carolina sun. With this indoor practice facility, the Chanticleers have not only solidified their commitment to athletic excellence but also laid the groundwork for a brighter, rainproof future. It's a journey that fans, athletes, and supporters eagerly anticipate, one that will undoubtedly see the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers soar to new heights in collegiate sports.
